What Are Endorsements?
Endorsements are additional certifications added to your CDL that allow you to operate specific types of vehicles or haul certain cargo.
Common Endorsements
H - Hazardous Materials
- Haul dangerous goods (fuel, chemicals, explosives)
- Requires additional written test
- Background check and fingerprinting
- Higher pay (+$0.03-0.08/mile)
T - Double/Triple Trailers
- Tow two or three trailers
- Written test only
- Popular in western states
N - Tank Vehicles
- Operate liquid tank trailers
- Written test only
- Often combined with H for tanker fuel loads
P - Passenger
- Transport 16+ passengers (buses)
- Written and skills test
- Background check required
S - School Bus
- Operate school buses
- Requires P endorsement first
- Extensive background check
- State-specific additional requirements
Best Endorsements for New Drivers
Start with your base CDL, then add H and N endorsements once you have experience. These open the most opportunities for higher pay.
